Adam from Counting Crows was on Howard the other morning, and it got me thinking about the song “Mr. Jones”. That song is now 10 years old. I first heard it in Dubuque, IA when I was in college.
Dubuque only had two tollerable stations. One was a KIIS-FM type station and the other was KOST type station. Needless to say, MTV was more popular then any of the local radio stations. When I had work-study, it was in the gym as an equipment manager. I had a little radio and I studied while listening to the music. Mr. Jones was a popular song and that radio station played the song every two hours, on the dot; you could set your watch to it.
So anyway, Everytime I hear that song I think of the University of Dubuque and all the funky shit that happened.
Some highlights
- introduction to casual sex – only sex in a relationahip prior to this
- sport drinking – I passed out for the first time in Iowa
- the wonders of POT – the herb, not the dictator Pol Pot
- I tried to start a college radio station. It was going to be internet based (the first time I heard about radio over the Internet). Never got the funding
- had three unoffical majors in one year; Enviromental Engeering, Psychology, and Business
- decided to go to UCLA extension to study the music business – I’ll talk about that another time
Ahh, the college days. Good times. Too bad there is no one around for Montez to trade old stories with.
