So last night I started submitting resumes to G4TechTV. My first position applied for, Marketing Coordinator. This is basically the same job I had when I worked in Irvine for Gateway Inc. However, I started poking around G4TechTV.com and I noticed a few things missing. Gone were the helpful show specific web pages and show notes. I couldn’t find too much stuff about any new shows or archives of old episodes.
I felt the need to investigate. Here’s what I know, I hope you still care.
Comcast bought TechTV and the G4 label was going to stick to the channel. Then Comcast fired everybody (almost), about 285 people. The whole operation was moving to Santa Monica. Then they fired and then rehired the Guru of TechTV, Leo Laporte (he will be doing Call For Help in Canada). Now anybody who watches the channel (144 in Westchester, 99 in Burbank) knows that the channel has not been quite the same. Still, I would love to work there and help this phoenix rise.
Six years ago I bought DirecTV. Page (of Page’s Pages) and I finally got the thing hooked up and the channel surfing began. One station in particular caught our eye. It was TechTV. We would watch for hours. Repeats, new shows, on the weekends, dreaming about getting our hands on al the cool tech gear (not to mention I liked Kate, moving on). When I moved, I took the dish with me. I visited Matt, Brian and Jon in Burbank, they watched also. It was an unspoken bond that allowed me to like them. When I found G4, it was good, but something was lacking. Much like Food Network, I was interested, but only for a while. How much Video Game programming can one person watch? TechTV had variety, but it was focused on Technology. G4 felt forced. I knew I could turn to the channel for some game news, but I didn’t want to watch 24/7.
Now they have merged, and so far, I find myself turning to G4 to watch (of all things) X-Play and the Screen Savers. I also enjoy Icons and the News show Pulse (I think it’s Pulse). So come on G4techTV, hire me and help me help you. Together, we can turn G4TechTV in to the Nickelodeon of technology.
Is Morgan Webb still living in SF or she’s move down to west LA?
Holy Crap! I was just looking for an answer to your question about Morgan, and I found these pictures of her a year or two ago. Does Morgan remind you of anyone? http://drop7.com/morgan/
Okay, I give up…who?
Although I do enjoy Screen Savers and especially XPlay, those were really the only two shows on TechTV that I liked.
And while I think that G4 still has way too many stupid shows on, I really like having a channel for just video games. I don’t think they should have merged them, but since they did, I’m glad the focus is on Video Games rather than on technology as a whole.
Of course, a slightly more even mix would be nice (65% Video Games, 35% other Tech stuff), but I’m hoping they don’t over do it.
