Looking Under Rocks

Well, as many of you know, I am moving. But I have yet to secure a location, so I am looking. Here are some observations about Los Angeles neighborhoods.

There are a lot of people living here. I mean the cities never end. If you ever spend time out of LA, you know what I mean. It’s not until you look around that you see the endless cycle of home, commercial, industry, home, commercial, industry. It repeats like the scenery from a merry-go-round. Some areas are more homes, some industry, other a mix of all.

A lot of the homes in LA are small. If it was built before 1970, it’s a two bedroom, one bath. The architecture is great, but it’s just too small. Having said that, old houses are really cool. They have a spirit and warmth that new homes lack. Newer homes seem soulless.

Nobody walks in LA. No really look around, NO ONE IS WALKING. It took one hour to go 15 miles on a Saturday afternoon. If you ever go house hunting, cluster your homes. You don’t want to drive from Los Feliz to Burbank to Downtown; you’ll never make it. Also, if you job permits it, try to move into a location close to the Metro. As I look for a new place, I am trying to consider my work route via Metro. From Burbank, I could take the Red Line to Western and take a bus to Wilshire. It would make me a better person at the end of the day.

So far, I’ve seen some great houses, some shit houses and some houses that made me feel “whatever”. Leaving 81st street is tough, and there are so many great memories…but life moves on. People grow, situations change and in the end, it’s all for the best. Houses come and go, but the friends and memories will be with me forever.
