Wednesday, Kelly called to tell me about a possible position at Universal. I received the contact information on Thursday, sent over my resume and cover letter, and had an interview this morning (Friday). I guess they dont mess around over there.
So this morning I interviewed with Jin Whang. She was a very cool twenty-something in the marketing department of Universal. She works with/for Maria, the head of the marketing dept, or something like that. Its a pretty cool, yet stressful position (much like The Wheelbarrow), and I think it will be rewarding. Of course I still have to get a second interview and then charm my way into the position. So maybe sometime next month, but I hope sooner.
I must say that my interviewing skills are most rusty. I found myself starring at Jin, thinking of answers. I was not my normal, witty and hilarious self. I hope she say through that and I get another chance. She kept talking about having to work close with the assistant and how they have to be on the same page and stuff like that. I kept thinking, say something funny, shes not smiling, crap, youre blowing it. You know stuff like that. The interview lasted about twenty minutes and I left feeling not so superior. But that was this morning, well see what, if anything happens on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.
I hope other candidates included a skinhead, Black Panthers, Hitler Youth, smelly southerners, anybody not from Michigan (Michigan natives are the only ones Ive met who actually work in the biz), high school grads, and the deaf, blind or sick. If so, then I have a great chance at a second interview. At least she complimented me for being on-time. Who shows up late to an interview?
Potential AMC employees always showed up late for interviews. It was hilarious, like why even bother?
Of course, many of them were taking a bus, so you could understand. . .but if someone can’t show up on-time/early for an interview, how often are they gonna be late for the job?
Well, good luck to you! AS a good measure you should call on Tuesday to follow up with Jin and tell her how much you liked meeting her and tell her you are really interested and hopes she considers you for the next round. Creative Advertising is crazy so if you show initiative and good follow ups skills it could kill any worries you had about your interview. This is advertsing so sell yourself Mike. This sounds crazy but send them a snack or something and a note saying how much you would like to be part of the team. My mentor people are always telling me stuff like that. They told me to put my favorite TV show on the bottom of my resume and also that I love animals. I thought they were crazy, but then I did it for fun and guess what the next three interviewers asked me about Alias and my love for dogs. If they are not deciding soon keep checking in. But only once a week and make a point to remember who you talked to so the following week you can call them by name or refer to the person you talk to. Shows you have good follow up. I did this with a company. I turned in my resume but they didn’t call so I kept calling each week and a month and half later they called me and asked for an interview and they remembered me. Anyway just some tips. i want you to get this MIKE…if this is what you want of course. I think its right up your alley and would give you a ton of options down the road. Remember don’t give up. You just went to round one and you got another couple round before you knock them out with your charm and abilities. GOOD LUCK!
Interviewing Tips From Above:
Some phrases you “don’t” want to hear at the conclusion of your interview…?
Well there’s only one:
“We’re still interviewing other candidates”…
Anytime you hear these dreaded 5 words or something similar it’s usually not a good sign.
Good luck, universal is one of the best companies to work for; best of luck.
Another Tip from Above:
ok, now you got me thinking and rooting for you.
and CutiePie’s has valid points also:
On your next interview always end your interview by stating simply that you “want the job.”
You’d be surprised how many times (more often than not) people don’t just come out and state that they want the position.
a simple: “I am looking forward to joining the Universal Family” or a “I really want this opportunity” will do.
Just word it to not come off “desperate” and it works too.
also ask smart questions:
A good question to ask is ~ “What’s a typical work day like”
When they ask you about “Strengths and Weaknesses”:
Strength: Workaholic
Weakness: Workaholic
hope these help for your second interview.
Good luck.
All of this is good advice. I usually send a letter afterward thanking them for the interview. Writing allows you to structure what you are going to say.
Also, “flogging the dolphin” before an interview always is a good way to clear your mind and center yourself. You probrably shouldn’t do this in the companies restroom. do this before leaving home.
Good luck Mike! It sounds like a good job.
