Movie Night – April '08

Coming Home DVD CoverSo Saturday was movie night. The peeps from 81st Street (minus Toby, plus Jung) gathered ’round and watched a film. This month’s host was Brian (and Kelly). The bulldog busted out his spices from The Rack and kicked out some killer chicken bites, Mac ‘n cheese squares, chili fries, and meatloaf on a cracker. Add a few beers and some Mojitos and you have a warn, homey feeling in your belly.

That was the perfect feeling because this month’s movie was Coming Home. This was my first time for this film. It was great. It’s a Brian all time favorite and I have managed to recommend it to all the peeps here at work.

Thank you Brian and Kelly for hosting the first movie night and for getting the band back together.

Thank you for reading my rant. I was watching TV and reading the LA Times on Sunday morning and I had to write that. A part 2 is on it’s way.

Fuck The World (part 1)

Hello loyal readers. It’s time for us to focus on something important, this world of ours. Blah blah blah live green. Yes I know it’s a fad to be green, but screw green, I’m talking about survival. I am talking about how you will feel when you die knowing that what you left behind is a pile of shit. What did you get in exchange for a pile of crap served up in a plastic coffin? A few years of driving a Hummer and bottled water from Fiji.

What the hell am I talking about? Well, first of all you need to stop over-driving. Where are you going? Plan your trips. You need to eat each week. You need to go to work everyday. You need to do some other shopping. Plan that shit. Know where the stores are on your way to and from work. Make a route from your office to the cleaners, to the store, to your home. Do not drive home in heavy traffic, change your cloths, drive to the dry cleaners, go home and eat. The next day you do the same but this time you go to the supermarket instead of the cleaners. Wrap that up into one trip. Do that stuff close to your office, after work, and then you can drive home a little later in the day and at a fixed speed (less traffic) with better fuel economy.

What the hell are we eating. “Meat is Murder”, remember that crap? Well, it’s true but not because cows are awesome. It should be rephrased to “Beef is Murder”. You know those green house gases you hear about? Turns out 1/3 of those gases come from the food you eat. Specifically from cattle. Cattle (pigs and sheep) fart and crap and burp. All those gases add up and are hurting the environment. These gases are green house gases (methane). Stop eating beef, lamb and pork. The biggest offender is the cow. In addition, that salmon you love so much has to be trucked from them to you (unless you live near salmon – you know you don’t) and those trucks use gas. Start eating local. Go (walk or take the bus) to your local farmers market and purchase fowl and fish (if it’s local), veggies and precooked carbs (bread, etc.) When you go bring your own bag.

Not only are those gases coming from the ass of a live cow, it also comes from the decomposition of your left-overs (the ones you toss, not the ones you eat). You know when you go to the Claim Jumper and you get the big ass plate of food. Then you don’t finish it because it is 3 times the size of the human stomach, well take that stuff home and eat it over the next few days. If you throw it out (or leave it behind) it goes into the trash. After the trash, it goes to the land fill where it is buried with other food waste (rather than mixed with dirt and composted). While buried, it breaks down (more commonly know as decomposition) and, in a non-oxygen environment, it creates methane gas. Yup, more green house gases.

Finally, drink your tap water. It’s really much better then you think. Or you can filter that tap water through a Britta filter you can use over and over again. Filter some water and pour it into a glass (or plastic) container and take it with you. Fiji water come from Fiji. Find Fiji on a map and then locate yourself. How close is that? It’s bottled there and then shipped (by boat and truck) to you in the US. You have to ship water into your country and you don’t live in a land-locked desert, that is waste. Think about all the wasted resources (oil, gas, rubber, glass, steel, misc. chemicals, exhaust, etc.) it takes to deliver a bottle of water to a store shelf. Then think about how easy it is to turn on the faucets and filter some water.

Focus on me

So I have been working recently at work and I have to tell you, I’ve missed it. It feels good to work on something you enjoy. I have been burned out from real estate but I love working on web sites and code. Code is awesome, you can do anything with code. Design, develop, simplify, etc. I don’t know how to program, but I know how to use and design other peoples programs.

Lately I have been using Salesforce and Google. Semi-Open source software. Did you know that you can start a business using Salesforce as your CRM, GoogleDocs as your office software, Gmail to run and host your business email, WordPress for your blog and web site management. Total cost: ~$55/mo.

If you are a small business with less than 100 employees, you should be listing your company on Google Local Search and utilizing YouTube to host a viral video you made about your service. You should also hire someone to manage your PPC account and, depending on your business, you should stop throwing your cash at the yellow pages. Instead, give it to me and my peeps and we can turn your mom and pop business into a mom and pop business that your kids will want to take over.

In the meantime, you can watch a little video about Google Docs:

Upgrade

This week I have been trying to make some upgrades to my technology. Two major upgrades are currently underway, my computer and my blog.

1. My Computer

So i was thinking of getting a new notebook and giving my brother my old computer. But I can’t seem to part with my Dell Inspiron 700m. This is a great machine with a killer screen. It is light, 4.5lbs, and has a very small footprint, about the size of a manila folder. The power is lacking and my hard drive is FULL.

I decided to keep my Dell and upgrade some parts. I want to max out the RAM (2gb vs the 1gb) and replace the hard drive (250gb vs 40gb). The goal is to get all the data off my external hard drive and onto my notebook.

So after some procrastination I finally purchased a new hard drive. Opted for the free shipping and one week later, my hard drive arrived. I grabbed the box that my computer came in and started digging around for the install disk…there are none. My computer has a hidden partition that contains the operating system and the computer came with no Windows XP CD’s/DVD. Instead, there is a piece of paper telling me that I need to go to support.dell.com/hdrp – which was not working. After much searching, I finally find a form that will allow me to request a copy of my operating system CD’s. So god knows how long it will be before I get to upgrade my computer.

If you have a copy of WinXP SP2, I would like a copy. I already have a serial, just need a copy of the disk.

2. WordPress

Version 2.5 is a major upgrade for wordpress. Mostly, it is ascetic improvements and the user experience is greatly improved. Using the back-end is now very pleasant.

If you write a blog and you host it yourself, you need to be using WordPress. Since I moved to WP from Movable Type, I have been very happy. If you want a free blog to replace your blogger or livejournal account, I recommend wordpress.com. However, I ran into a problem this week when I upgraded to version 2.5.

Part of the magic with the upgrade is the increased use of AJAX. But the AJAX image upload they used is not playing nice with my hostgator server. In fact, it is not working with a lot of people’s servers. So far, no solution. I spent three hours looking for an update and manipulating code on my server.

I have technology blue-balls.
