Over the weekend (which was great) we had breakfast at Taco G’s (aka Tacos Gutierrez). There was no place to sit because a lot of family members were watching the NFL Draft waiting for one of the Gutierrez members to be chosen. While we ate and watched the draft, it became apparent that there are several things about the NFL draft that I don’t fully understand.
So I checked out Wikipedia for an explanation of the NFL Draft. Here (I think) is why the draft is important if you are a #1 – 10 pick.
The drafted players are paid salaries commensurate with the position in which they were drafted. High first-round picks get paid the most, and low round picks get paid the least. There is a de facto pay scale for drafted rookies.
You can read the full entry about the NFL Draft at Wikipedia.org Basically, if you are considered the #1 draft pick and you opt to skip the draft so you can play with the team of your choice, you can only be paid based on a “rookie scale” vs. the “drafted rookie scale” you would be paid from if you were drafted.
According to the DRAFT TRACKER, Mr. Gutierrez (CAL Alumni) was not drafted and will be at traing camp this Friday.
